I used to be hoping The Final Shape could be a superb expansion for Destiny 2 to cap off a ten-year saga, but this isn’t what I used to be expecting. The reviews are in and to date no less than, Destiny 2’s Final Shape is the best-reviewed game/release of the 12 months on OpenCriticand shared this honor on Metacritic. Here’s the breakdown:
OpenCritic:
- Destiny 2: The Final Form – 94
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 93
- Balatro-91
- 8 – 90
- Hades II – 90
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered – 90
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – 90
- Animal fountain – 89
- Paper Mario: The Gate to Eternity – 89
- Solium Inferno – 88
Metacritic
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth – 92
- Destiny 2: The Final Form – 92
- Animal fountain – 91
- Balatro-90
- The Last of Us Part II Remastered – 90
- 8 – 90
- Horizon Forbidden West: Complete Edition – 89
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth – 89
- Lorelei and the Laser Eyes – 88
- Paper Mario: The gate to the thousand-year door.
I only have Destiny at #2 on this Metacritic list because there are more reviews for Final Fantasy, and with more scores it’s harder to take care of a high average. The difference in scores between the lists is that Metacritic includes some critics that OpenCritic doesn’t, similar to the 46/100 for The Final Shape by GamesRD, which probably brought the Metacritic rating down a couple of points to #1 by itself. And certainly one of the bottom scores, Xbox Era’s 7/10, rose about 36 hours after release, so before the raid, final campaign mission, or exotic quest were even released, because it was attempting to be the primary rated review live.
And after all, to be completely honest, my review is predicated on those averages. I gave it a ten/10, with the last two things I gave that rating being Phantom Liberty and Elden Ring from Cyberpunk 2077. So that is high praise. But speaking of Elden Ring, if there’s anything that would take the highest spot, perhaps it’s Shadow of the Erdtree, because I mean, it’s more Elden Ring, a game that got a rating of 95 when it was first released. I’m almost expecting that to occur.
But what concerning the big AAA titles? Is a somewhat quieter 12 months in comparison with last 12 months, and I could be surprised if we saw significantly more high-profile 90+ games, let alone 92-94 games like here.
For comparison, Destiny 2’s panned Lightfall expansion scored 71. The critically acclaimed Witch Queen expansion scored 88. The much-hailed “best” expansion before it, Forsaken, scored 82. The base version of Destiny 2 scored 84. So yes, that is an area the sport has never reached. Very impressive.
