Somehow I still managed to screw it up by guessing TROPE – I left my green boxes where they were because I used to be busy and distracted and clearly not pondering straight! – and so only brought the number all the way down to 7. DRONE was higher, leaving me with just one option: DROVE for the win. As in he went to Montana or The cowboys led the herd of cattle on horseback to Montana, also often called the “cattle drive.” As a child, I used to be an enormous John Wayne fan.

Today’s Wordle etymology

The word ‘drove’ comes from the Old English ‘drāf’, which refers to various cattle herded together in a bunch. This term is derived from the verb ‘drīfan’, meaning ‘to drive’. Over time, ‘drove’ got here to mean any group of animals or people moving together, especially when driven or herded. The Middle English form ‘drof’ also contributed to the fashionable English ‘drove’. The primary meaning has all the time been related to movement, especially in a controlled or directed manner.
