Domenica Feraud is a first-generation Ecuadorian producer, author and actress who grew up in New York. She became famous together with her play Rinse, repeat which inspired critics across the country. Domenica’s latest work as a playwright is someone spectacular, a play that premiered on the Signature Theatre on July 17.
Below she talks about her New York preferences.
Where do you reside in NYC?
TriBeCa
What is your favorite neighborhood in NYC and why?
I’ve lived in TriBeCa since I used to be eight years old and it’s still one in all my favorite places on the planet. The architecture is gorgeous and as a runner, I like being near the West Side Highway. Plus, almost every subway line has a stop there, which makes traveling extra convenient.
Can you share a few of your favorite spots in a theater district and tell us what makes them so great?
The Drama Book Shop has an incredible choice of plays in addition to a fantastic cafe. I like grabbing a tea and devouring some theatre treasures. The Signature lobby can be a unbelievable place to satisfy up with friends to write down – their sofas are so cozy!
The best place to eat before or after the theater and why. What dishes must you order?
My parents took me out for sushi once I was 5. Our regular place was Sushi of Gari, and I still love going there. Their hijiki salad is great, and for those who’re up for a extremely special experience, their sushi omakase is tough to beat.
The best bar within the theater district and what drink do they serve there?
Rosevale Cocktail Room is a fantastic place on the corner of forty eighth and eighth Street. The last movie I saw with my mother was Everything all over the place directly. I even named one in all my characters Evelyn in homage to the film. They have a cocktail aptly named “Everywhere, All At Once” that I highly recommend.
Insider suggestions for having fun with a Broadway show. Is there anything to make the experience even higher?I at all times attempt to get an aisle seat. This way I can skip the lavatory line and leave the theater more easily when crowds begin to form. If you are searching for a reduction, seats with limited views within the front rows are higher than seats further back. It’s nice to be up near the actors and also you often don’t miss much. I also recommend bringing a sweater, especially in the summertime. The air con could be very loud!
Which New York theater do you prefer to go to essentially the most and why?
I like Signature. Paige Evans programmed some amazing shows during her time there. Just punishment, a plea for the existence of GodAnd The Antipodes are particularly notable. I like what Signature is doing to guard the writers’ experience and appreciate the opportunities given to writers/directors from underrepresented communities.
What other Broadway shows are currently in your radar?
Stereophonic is incredible. I’ve seen it 3 times and am about to look at it a fourth time. Sarah Pidgeon is a revelation. Illinois is breathtaking – my family watched it on the anniversary of my mother’s death and it was a really cathartic experience. And then after all Oh, Mary! is sensible. Cole Escola has a comedic timing that’s on no account inferior to that of Fran Drescher (my personal Lucille Ball).
Do you share your insider gems from New York?
As a movie buff, I like going to IFC and Angelika. Alamo Drafthouse is great for those who desire a full dinner and movie experience, and iPic is an excellent cute place for a date. My favorite bookstores include McNally Jackson and Books Are Magic – the staff’s recommendations are unbelievable. If you are craving some delicious bread, stop by Frenchette Bakery. The best place for desserts is Sweet Rehab, Brookfield Place if you wish to shop, and % Arabica serves delicious coffee.
Can you tell us your favorite cinemas world wide and why?
The Donmar Warehouse in London is incredible – I’ll always remember the production of parade I saw it in 2007. It’s probably my favorite black box on the planet. The National Theatre can be my favorite, as is The Young Vic. The Geffen Playhouse in LA is one other gem with a wonderful program.
