The 100 best cities to live, work and visit

There are the most effective places on the earth to live, the most effective places to work and the most effective places to go to. But what are the most effective cities on the earth that mix all three attributes: the most effective places to live, work and visit? An annual report from Resonance– a world consulting firm – has the answers.

Each 12 months, Resonance produces a rating of the world’s 100 hottest cities based on quality of life, work and travel. For 2024, it checked out greater than 270 cities with populations of over 1,000,000 people after which used 24 metrics – from education levels to culture and more – to rate each place in three categories: quality of life, friendliness and prosperity.

This 12 months, London has taken the crown for the ninth 12 months in a row. “London still reigns supreme over all world cities,” the authors write within the report. “Despite crippling COVID lockdowns and economic devastation. Despite Brexit. Despite a war in Europe. The city is more indomitable and part of the global discourse than ever before.”

What makes London so attractive? According to Resonance, England’s capital city tops each the livability and loveability indexes. It also beats all other global cities in several subcategories: Instagram hashtags, Facebook check-ins and Tripadvisor reviews. London also performed well within the subcategories of education level and culture.

Look around you – there’s evidence of London in all places. There’s loads of wealth, from luxury property sales to financial investments. “According to fDi Markets, the Financial Times’ foreign investment tracker, London has attracted the most foreign direct investment in technology from international companies since 2018, ahead of New York, Singapore and Dubai,” writes Resonance.

And there’s plenty for travelers to experience. “The culinary industry is experiencing a revival after dozens of the city’s most famous restaurants closed due to the pandemic,” says Resonance. Plus, “dozens of newly opened and equally daring hotels are waiting for us.” And travelers are responding – London ranks third in the very best spending by international travelers with an incredible $16.07 billion.

The second best city to live, work and visit on the earth is Paris, with Resonance stressing that town is “gearing itself up for the future with visionary sustainability and investment appeal.” And although town “faces enormous social and economic challenges,” Paris has loads of reasons to are available second. The World Travel & Tourism Council recently named Paris the world’s top urban destination, with a hospitality industry price $35.6 billion last 12 months – “and set to grow to $49 billion by 2032,” in line with Resonance. Paris has also turn out to be far more livable and loveable, with less automotive traffic, a cleaner and healthier Seine, pedestrian-friendly amenities and more.

Third on the list this 12 months is New York City. “America’s largest city is an example of urban recovery on a grand scale, with a dizzying list of new shows, hotels and parks – and record real estate prices,” says Resonance. “This city is back.”

In addition to New York City’s high rating, the United States fared well in 2024, with 24 cities on the list – greater than some other country. New York City was followed by San Francisco. Although town faced some high-profile challenges, it ranked seventh overall. “Despite San Francisco’s meticulously documented challenges, job opportunities and infrastructure expansion are paving the way as the world continues to rush at us as it always does,” says Resonance.
