Vice President Kamala Harris said she would respect the independence of the Federal Reserve to contrast her Republican rival Donald Trump in 2024. She plans to unveil parts of her economic agenda next week.
Harris was asked about Trump’s recent comments that presidents must have a say in rates of interest and monetary policy – a move that will upend the Fed’s longstanding practice of independence from political actors.
Harris said she couldn’t disagree more “strongly” with that stance.
“The Fed is an independent institution and as president I would never interfere in the Fed’s decisions,” she told reporters in Phoenix on Saturday at the top of a campaign appearance within the swing state of Arizona.
Trump has long expressed frustration that the manager branch doesn’t have more influence over rates of interest. At a press conference on Thursday, he criticized Fed Chairman Jerome Powell, saying the central bank chief was “a little too early and a little too late” in adjusting rates of interest.
The former president said he has “made a lot of money,” has been “very successful,” and believes he has “better instincts than many other people who sit at or chair the Federal Reserve.”
Powell has promised not to permit political pressure to influence the central bank’s decisions. For many years, US presidents have traditionally avoided publicly criticizing the Fed for its rates of interest.
Harris, the Democratic candidate, also said she plans to unveil her policy agenda next week, specializing in the economy and cost-cutting.
Voter dissatisfaction with President Joe Biden’s handling of the economy poses a significant political liability for Harris’ campaign as high prices hit American households hard and overshadow the administration’s efforts to emphasise policies to bolster domestic manufacturing and infrastructure spending.
Harris held a rally on Friday in Arizona, certainly one of the swing states that can resolve the November election, before heading to an event in Las Vegas on Saturday – a part of a campaign tour together with her running mate and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, aiming to make use of the brand new momentum for her White House bid.
Polls show that Harris Trump’s lead within the polls was worn out He held that post for many of the summer as candidates spent three months preparing for Election Day.
