Amazon CEO orders employees to return to the office five days every week

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy made a plea – and a requirement – for working within the office on Monday.

In a publicly available message, Jassy said that Amazon’s Over 1.5 million employees must return to the office five days every week starting January 2. Amazon can also be returning desk work to offices that had this structure before the pandemic.

Jassy positioned the move as a greater way of working and a return to pre-Covid life.

“We’ve observed that it’s easier for our team members to learn, model, practice and reinforce our culture. Collaboration, brainstorming and invention are easier and more effective. Mutual teaching and learning is smoother and teams tend to be better connected,” explained Jassy.

Jassy also said that situations that require distant work, corresponding to illness, an emergency or being on the road, are still acceptable.

However, these examples of distant work are the exception to the brand new rule, not the rule.

Amazon employees are back within the office at the least three days every week As of February 2023A report from Bamboo HR published in July showed that one in 4 managers secretly hoped their employees would quit resulting from stricter return-to-office policies.

“Strengthening our culture stays certainly one of the highest priorities for the S-Team [senior leadership team] and me. And I give it some thought on a regular basis,” he wrote. “We need to act like the largest startup on the earth.”

Under the brand new policy, working from home two days every week will now not be possible. The office culture will likely be restored to what it was before the pandemic to strengthen the work culture and achieve higher results, Jassy explained.
