This Puccini opera marks Jonathan’s Met Opera debut, but his starring role gives him a second hit Madame Butterfly as Pinkerton.
Raised in Princeton, New Jersey, Jonathan attended the American Boychoir School in Princeton, the Manhattan School of Music for his bachelor’s degree, after which the Mannes School of Music for graduate studies in performance studies. Jonathan took a break from the opera profession for 3 years to DJ in nightclubs in Manhattan before launching his opera profession.
I interviewed the aspiring singer about his favorite places in New York, his love of opera and traveling.
My favorite opera that will not be my very own is:
As a young opera singer, it was all the time my dream to play the role of Figaro in Rossini’s opera The Barber of Seville. The plot is wonderful, the music is virtuosic and the characters are fascinating. Perhaps Figaro will appear within the distant future, but for now I’ll enjoy it through my talented baritone colleagues.
My ritual before the performance:
I sleep in and check out not to speak all day. I eat a BIG lunch and do a fast, lively workout with a number of stretching. Then I take a nap, followed by a slow hour-long warm-up, discover a bent nail for good luck, after which…SHOWTIME!
After a performance:
Never do the identical thing twice, except… a giant late dinner with an excellent bottle of wine.
My favorite opera visitor (does something):
Know the plot prematurely, fan the flames of the talent and spread the word around town.
My role model in business is:
Plácido Domingo is actually certainly one of my favorite opera business and artistic role models. He is probably essentially the most successful modern opera singer and music entrepreneur on the earth.
