After years of careful planning (throughout the pandemic, no less), Hotel Marcel New Haven opened in May 2022 because the country’s first Passive House certified hotel. For this award, the 165-room property had to satisfy strict standards and exhibit high energy efficiency, resilience and exemplary comfort all yr round.
Making all this occur was no easy task – especially because the hotel is the primary of its kind – but Becker was firmly convinced from day one which the Hotel Marcel should run exclusively on locally generated energy without fossil fuels. To this end: Over 1,000 solar panels installed on the roof of the constructing and within the parking zone provide the entire hotel’s electricity. In addition to the guest rooms and customary areas, the laundry and the all-day restaurant are also supplied with electricity BUILD— where chef Megan Gill just opened a tantalizing completely satisfied hour featuring New England pumpkin hummus, local grass-fed cuts of beef, and eco-friendly cocktails — and, most interestingly, a backup system that enables Hotel Marcel to operate easily even during power outages to operate. Other sustainable measures include 24 electric vehicle charging stations and a free electric vehicle shuttle for hotel guests. Since opening, Hotel Marcel has also achieved LEED Platinum status – becoming only the tenth hotel within the U.S. to realize this elite designation – and is on the right track to realize net zero by 2025.
