
Nintendo is bringing more diversity to its board.
The video game giant, in its most up-to-date earnings report, announced plans to appoint three women to the board. Miyoko Demay, Eiko Osawa and Keiko Akashi have been named as expected latest directors, scheduled to take office on June 27.
If approved, they may join Asa Shinkawa, who became the primary woman to hitch Nintendo’s board in 2020. Previously, there had been no woman on the chief board for the reason that company was founded in 1889.
Demay is a longtime executive at Tiffany & Co.’s Japanese operations, where he served as president and chief executive of luxury strategy and operations.
Osawa has worked for various firms – including Asahi and Ernst & Young – and has worked as a tax advisor. She is currently an external auditor for EXEO Group. Akashi, who can also be an auditor, worked for the Osaka Regional Taxation Bureau for a few years. Osawa and Akashi will join Nintendo’s Audit and Oversight Committee as members.
The company announced in 2021 the creation of a “Nintendo Women and Allies” initiative to advance the careers of girls there. describe it as “supporting and promoting diversity, equity and inclusion for women through leadership, networking and professional development opportunities.”
However, in its 2023 annual report, the corporate admitted that this was not yet the case something like a boys’ club, with women occupying only 4.2% of leadership positions. Additionally, the report found that girls at Nintendo earned about 72% of men’s earnings. The company said this was attributable to differences within the length of time employees worked for the corporate.
