In 1987, Mike Francesa was working behind the scenes as a sports analyst for CBS Sports. He desired to be a bunch on the country’s recent sports talk network. But within the eyes of Luke Griffin, the manager chargeable for choosing the brand new sports talk show hosts, he had one problem: Francesa’s Long Island accent. Griffin found this very negative and said NO.
But Francesa had an ace up her sleeve.
One of Francesa’s best friends on the time was Jim Nantz, the anchor of CBS’ college football and basketball broadcasts. And Nantz knew Griffin thoroughly. So Francesa called Nantz and asked him to discuss with Griffin.
Nantz made a call on his friend’s behalf, and Griffin relented and offered Francesa a spot as weekend host on the brand new sports talk radio station.
“They gave me a chance over the weekend. If Jim Nantz hadn’t known Luck Griffin, I probably would never have had a chance,” Francesa said in a recent interview with the New York Post.
