Delta hires famous lawyer and demands compensation from CrowdStrike: report

After a devastating outage left hundreds of thousands of Microsoft customers with dreaded blue screens and canceled or delayed 1000’s of flights, Delta Airlines has reportedly hired a high-profile lawyer to hunt damages from CrowdStrike.

CNBC reports that Delta has hired 83-year-old attorney David Boies to represent the corporate in pursuing damages after the July 19 CrowdStrike update caused widespread outages on Microsoft devices and internal problems at Delta.

The update particularly affected a crew tracking tool and made it difficult for the airline to conduct normal business operations, said Delta CEO Ed Bastian.

“While our initial efforts to stabilize operations were difficult and frustratingly slow and complex, we made good progress this week and the worst effects of the outage caused by CrowdStrike are clearly behind us,” Bastian wrote in a memo last week.

Boies’ law firm, Boies Schiller Flexner, includes a lot of well-known former clients, including victims of Jeffrey Epstein, Theranos and Harvey Weinstein.

Delta has not confirmed CNBC’s report at press time, but CNN says You received a confirmation by a “person familiar with the decision.” Both Delta and Microsoft declined to comment to CNN.

Delta is estimated to have lost between $350 million and $500 million because of the outages, which resulted within the cancellation of nearly 7,000 flights and over 176,000 dissatisfied customers.
