Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed his support for Donald Trump on Saturday, just minutes after the previous president was injured in a shooting at a campaign rally.
On his social media platform X Musk tweeted “I fully support President Trump and hope for his speedy recovery,” he said, posting his comments together with a video clip of Trump being escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents.
In a later post Musk added“The last time America had such a strong candidate was Theodore Roosevelt.”
In response to an individual’s request to guard themselves after the shooting, Musk said two people tried to kill him on separate occasions over the past eight months, adding that they were arrested with weapons about 20 minutes from Tesla’s headquarters in Austin, Texas.
On Friday, sources told Bloomberg that Musk donated to America PAC, a political motion committee that campaigns to elect Trump, but the precise amount of the donation is unclear.
Meanwhile, in response to Bloomberg, hedge fund billionaires Ken Griffin and Paul Singer recently met with Trump to debate donations to his campaign.
The shooting occurred Saturday night in Butler, Pennsylvania, as Trump was addressing a crowd ahead of the Republican National Convention on Monday.
A video of the incident showed Trump clutching his ear as gunshots were heard before his security guards surrounded him. As he was taken away, blood could possibly be seen on the footage on his face.
New York Mayor Eric Adams said police were sending more officers to certain locations, including Trump Tower, the Trump Building at 40 Wall Street, Foley Square and City Hall.
Ian Bremmer, president of political risk research and advisory firm Eurasia Group, tweeted: “Former President Trump shot at rally. US democracy in crisis.”
He added later“The political violence on January 6 was abhorrent and totally unjustified. It is equally abhorrent and totally unjustified on July 13.”
Democratic and Republican lawmakers condemned the political violence and expressed relief that Trump is secure.
In a press release, President Joe Biden said: “I am praying for him and his family and for everyone who was at the rally as we await more information.”
