Hunter Biden was found guilty on all three counts on Tuesday to buy a revolver in 2018, asProsecutors argued that the president’s son lied on a compulsory gun purchase form by saying he didn’t use illegal drugs or have a drug addiction.
The jury found Hunter Biden guilty of lying to a federally licensed gun dealer. He had made false statements in his application that he was not a drug user and that he had possessed the weapon illegally for 11 days. The jury in Wilmington, Delaware, deliberated for about three hours over two days.
Hunter Biden began straight and showed little emotion as the decision was read. After the decision, he hugged his two lawyers and smiled weakly. He kissed his wife Melissa they usually left the courtroom together. First Lady Jill Biden arrived on the courthouse minutes after the jury’s verdict was announced and was not within the courtroom when the decision was read.
When Judge Maryellen Noreika pronounces the sentence, he faces as much as 25 years in prison. However, first-time offenders don’t receive anywhere near the utmost sentence and it’s unclear whether she would put him behind bars. The judge has not yet set a date for the sentencing.
Well, Hunter Biden and likely Republican presidential candidate Donald TrumpPresident Joe Biden’s biggest political rival, was convicted by American juries in an election 12 months that was as much in regards to the courtroom because it was about campaign events and rallies.
Joe Biden has stayed away from the federal courtroom in Delaware where his son was on trial and said little in regards to the case, not wanting to seem like interfering in a criminal case brought by his own Justice Department. But allies of the Democrat are concerned in regards to the impact of the trial – and now the conviction – on the 81-year-old, who has long apprehensive in regards to the health and continued sobriety of his only living son.
Hunter Biden and Trump have each argued that they’ve turn out to be victims of current politics. But while Trump continues to falsely claim that the decision was “manipulated”, Joe Biden has stated that he’ll accept the decision and is not going to seek to pardon his son.
Hunter Biden’s legal problems are usually not over yet. He faces a trial in California in September on Charged with non-payment of $1.4 million in taxes and Republicans in Congress have signaled that they are going to proceed their stalled impeachment proceedings against the president. The president has not been accused or charged with any wrongdoing by prosecutors investigating his son.
The prosecution devoted much of the trial to emphasizing the severity of Hunter Biden’s drug problem, presenting highly personal testimony and embarrassing evidence.
Jurors heard testimony from Hunter Biden’s ex-wife and an ex-girlfriend about his regular crack use and their failed efforts to assist him get off it. Jurors saw images of the president’s son shirtless and unkempt in a unclean room and half-naked with crack pipes in his hands. And jurors saw a video of his crack cocaine being weighed on a scale.
Hunter Biden didn’t testify, but jurors heard his voice when prosecutors played audio clips from his 2021 memoir, “Beautiful Things,” by which he talks about hitting all-time low after the death of his brother Beau in 2015 and his descent into drug addiction before finally getting sober.
Prosecutors argued the evidence was essential to prove that Hunter, 54, was addicted on the time he bought the gun and had subsequently lied when he checked “no” on the shape asking if he was an “illicit drug user or drug addict.”
Defense attorney Abbe Lowell had argued that Hunter Biden’s way of thinking was different when he wrote the book than when he bought the gun – when he didn’t imagine he was addicted. Lowell identified to the jury that a number of the questions within the gun transaction log were asked in the current tense, similar to “Are you an illegal drug user or addicted to” drugs.
And Lowell said Hunter Biden could have felt on the time that he had a drinking problem, but not a drug problem. Alcohol abuse doesn’t preclude the acquisition of a gun.
Hunter Biden had hoped last 12 months to finish a lengthy federal investigation under a take care of prosecutors that might avoid the spectacle of a trial so near the 2024 election. Under the deal, he could have pleaded guilty to tax offenses and avoided prosecution within the gun case if he stayed out of trouble for 2 years.
However, the deal fell through after Trump’s nominee Noreika questioned unusual points of the proposed agreement and lawyers were unable to resolve the matter.
Attorney General Merrick Garland then appointed chief investigator David Weiss, the U.S. Attorney for Delaware, as special advisor last Augustand a month later, Hunter Biden was indicted.
Hunter Biden said he was charged since the Justice Department caved in to pressure from Republicans who argued that the Democratic president’s son was receiving special treatment.
The reason police even asked questions on the revolver is because Hallie Biden, Beau’s widow, found it unloaded in Hunter’s truck on October 23, 2018, panicked, and threw it right into a trash can at Janssen’s Market, where a person by accident caught it from the trash. She testified in court in regards to the incident.
Hallie Biden, who had a romantic relationship with Hunter after Beau’s death, eventually called the police. Officers recovered the gun from the person, who had by accident taken it out of the trash together with other recyclables. The case was eventually closed because of an absence of cooperation from Hunter Biden, who was considered the victim.
