The comedy rock duo Stubborn D – consists Jack Black and Kyle Gass – has cancelled the remaining of their tour after Gass made comments concerning the assassination attempt on Donald Trump.
During a concert in Sydney on Sunday, Black presented Gass with a birthday cake and asked him to make a wish. Gass replied, “Don’t miss Trump next time,” an obvious reference to the rally shooting a day earlier, the previous president left with an injured ear. Gass’s video was widely shared on social media.
“I was completely taken aback by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form,” Black said on Tuesday in a Statement on Instagram“After much consideration, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.”
After Black’s statement, Gass apologized on Instagram.
“The sentence I improvised in Sydney on Sunday night was highly inappropriate, dangerous and a terrible mistake,” he wrote on Tuesday. “I do not condone violence in any form, shape or form against anyone. What happened was a tragedy and I am incredibly sorry for my serious lapse in judgement.”
The band recently wrapped up performances within the US and Europe, and their “Spicy Meatball Tour” was scheduled to proceed in Newcastle on Tuesday night and visit most major cities in Australia and New Zealand this month before returning to the US for a number of select dates in October.
“Frontier Touring regrets to announce that tonight’s Tenacious D concert at Newcastle Entertainment Centre has been postponed,” their tour company said in a Statement on Instagram Tuesday. “Ticket holders are asked to hold onto their tickets until further information is available.”
When asked for further comment, a representative for the band referred the Associated Press to Black’s statement. Details about refunds for the remaining tour dates weren’t immediately available.
