” A quiet place: day one ” is making a splash on the box office. The prequel grossed an estimated $53 million in North American theaters during its first weekend, in accordance with studio estimates Sunday.
It’s each a franchise bestseller and significantly greater than expected. Before the weekend, advance tracking for “Day One” had projected a $40 million debut, but audiences were clearly more excited to see the motion horror starring Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn, released by Paramount. The same cannot be said of Kevin Costner’s ” Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1”, which opened with $11 million.
However, the victory of “Quiet Place” was not quite enough to grab the coveted first place within the charts. This honor once more went to Disney and Pixar’s hit film “ Inside Out 2“, which is estimated to have grossed $57.4 million to its third weekend on the cinemaand exceeded the $1 billion mark worldwide.
There’s a slim likelihood the locations will change when the actual numbers are released on Monday. But either way, it’s excellent news for theaters in a summer season that is finally picking up steam but continues to be well behind last 12 months’s (down 19%) and pre-pandemic (down 36% from 2019) norms.
Inside Out 2 continues to be a box office hit the likes of which the industry hasn’t seen since Barbie nearly a 12 months ago. In just three weeks of release, the film has grossed nearly $470 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $1.01 billion. The sequel is the one 2024 film to cross the billion-dollar mark, and it did so in only 19 days – a record for an animated film.
“The film’s overwhelming global success demonstrates once again that audiences around the world are responding to compelling, entertaining films and want to enjoy them on the big screen,” said Michael O’Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners, in a press release.
Michael Sarnoski’s PG-13-rated “A Quiet Place: Day One” can be quickly approaching a very important threshold. Including $45.5 million from international screenings in 59 markets, the $67 million production has already grossed $98.5 million.
“The ‘A Quiet Place’ franchise is very popular,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s head of domestic distribution. “We listened to the fans who wanted to expand the universe.”
In a rare feat for a 3rd film, it opened higher than each “A Quiet Place” ($50.2 million opening in April 2018) and “ A Quiet Place: Part II ($47.5 million, opening May 2021). Johannes Krasinskiwho had written and directed the primary two movies, continued to function producer.
“It’s one of those rare horror franchises that has received incredible acclaim from audiences and critics alike,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore.
Nearly 40% of the film’s revenue got here from 3,708 theaters within the United States and Canada, playing in “premium theaters” comparable to IMAX and other large formats. The film opened to mostly positive reviews (84% on Rotten Tomatoes); audiences gave it a CinemaScore of B+ and 4 out of 5 stars on PostTrak.
“We’ve put together a compelling package, but I also think it shows that people want to go to the movies,” Aronson said. “The market really works when there’s choice and something for everyone.”
The start of “Horizon”, then again, was slow. Although older viewers, who’re almost definitely to support a Western epic, don’t normally flock to the cinemas on the opening weekend, as is commonly the case with horror and superhero movies, the road ahead is not going to be easy: reviews have wasn’t great and it received a disappointing B-CinemaScore.
The stakes are also a bit different with “Horizon,” a $100 million production that Costner financed himself and partnered with Warner Bros. to distribute. The film opened in 3,334 locations. Costner’s decades-long passion project was financed with a mortgage on a property in Santa Barbara, Calif., and he dropped out of “Yellowstone” to see it through. With a daring, unconventional strategy, “Chapter 2” hits theaters later this summer, on August 16. He also has plans for 2 more movies.
“The Western genre is one of those very specific ones,” said Dergarabedian. “It’s going to be about the long-term game.”
A fast take a look at the highest 10 shows that audiences mostly prefer franchises and “well-known classics” to the originals. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” landed within the charts right behind “Horizon” and has been in theaters for 4 weeks.
“In the summer, the audience wants what is tried and tested, what is familiar,” said Dergarabedian.
He was also impressed by the range of genres in the highest 10, which included two Indian movies: Telugu sci-fi film “Kalki 2898 AD” at number five with $5.4 million and Punjabi-language film “Jatt & Juliet 3” at number nine with $1.5 million.
“If you can’t find anything that appeals to you in the multiplex cinema right now, you haven’t looked hard enough,” said Dergarabedian.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday in U.S. and Canadian theaters, in accordance with Comscore. Final domestic numbers might be released Monday.
