I feel I discovered a bug within the Strands puzzle today. I’m not kidding! Read on to search out out what it’s. But first:

How to play Strands

The New York Times Strands puzzle is a twist on the classic word search puzzle. It’s currently in beta, meaning it should only remain available if enough people play it day by day.

Every day there may be a brand new Strands game. The game presents you with a 6×8 grid of letters. The goal is to search out a gaggle of words which have something in common and you’ll get a clue as to what the theme is. When you discover a theme word, it should remain highlighted in blue.

You also need to search out a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects two opposite sides of the board. While the theme words will not be a correct noun, the spangram generally is a proper noun. Once you discover the spangram, it should remain highlighted in yellow.

Be warned: you could be in your guard.

“Some topics are fill-in-the-blanks. They can also be steps in a process, items that all belong to the same category, synonyms or homophones,” notes the New York Times. “Just as she varies the difficulty of Wordle puzzles within a week, [Wordle and Strands editor Tracy] Bennett plans to throw curve balls to the Strands solvers every now and then.”

What is today’s Strands tip?

Time for the NYT tip after which for my very own tip:

You are the most effective

And mine is:

Compliments

What are today’s Strands answers?

Now we start with the reply a part of this system, the spangram and the entire list of other answers. The spangram is:

CHAMPION

Or is it? It says so on the page, but read on:

The full list:

EXCELLENT

PERFECT

ICONIC

HIGHEST

SUPERLATIVE

So I feel the error here is that the spangram needs to be SUPERLATIVE, which incorporates all the opposite words. CHAMPION goes all the best way across the page, but so does SUPERLATIVE, and I feel that is a mistake. Maybe not, but that is the way it reads to me.
