Ship Shape Interview: Jill Whelan

Actress Jill Whelan, now a Celebrations Ambassador for Princess Cruises, and I spoke about her passion for sailing.

Laura Manske: Two years ago Princess Cruises organized its first cruise The Love Boat Theme reunion that sailed the Mexican Riviera. There continues to be strong sentimentality towards the unique solid.

Jill Whelan: Every time I get along with my solid mates it’s like coming home because we’re family. I actually mean that. This can be our second themed cruise since 2022. We were all touched and overwhelmed by the incredible response from the guests. The nostalgia for the show still excites people. Princess was the oceangoing co-star of The Love Boat. This is exclusive.

Manx: What are the important thing expected moments with passengers in front of you?

Whelan: Well, definitely our solid meeting on the Princess Theater, where we are going to share our fondest memories, laugh loads and answer questions from the audience. The vow renewal we do can also be incredibly sweet. So many couples renew their love for one another The Love Boat. We get to share of their big day.

Manx: You played along The Love Boat on board the Pacific Princess from 11 years.

Whelan: I used to be so young. Gavin MacLeod welcomed me with open arms and a lot warmth and love once I played his daughter. Remember, I got here into an already successful show and was the youngest. So romance wasn’t yet a cornerstone of my story. But Gavin made me feel comfortable, as did all of the actors. I remember attempting to take all of it in, learning from everyone who was on set and appreciating the places we visited on our Princess cruises.

Manx: Growing up watching the series as a youngster, how did the series influence your views on romantic love?

Whelan: I had my first kiss The Love Boat. Let’s just say it wasn’t as magical as I had hoped. As Gavin all the time said, “The show gave people something to dream about.” I fell in love with the romance of the ocean and connecting with people on holiday. I suppose like several teenager, I had fantasies of falling in love and sailing off into the sunset. And that is what happened to me once I met my husband Jeff in 2016. We cannot go on enough cruises as of late. We absolutely adore it!

Manx: Share something, perhaps surprising, that brings you joy.

Whelan: The horns of many princess ships sound The Love Boat Theme song. When I’m on board, I hear people singing the theme song – and it makes me smile.
