Three Key insights

  1. The power of passionate work

Brian didn’t got down to be a producer – he desired to be a performer. It all began in third grade when a teacher forged him as Santa Claus in a college play called “…”. “I don’t remember anything that happened. As the lights came on and off, I just knew I wanted to do it again, like your favorite roller coaster ride,” he told me. That single moment tied him to the theater for a lifetime – and eventually led him to a profession managing multimillion-dollar productions. Today, his budgets range from $7.5 million to $16 million, and he manages all the pieces with skills learned entirely on the job—no business school required.

Take away: Don’t wait until you might have all of the qualifications – pursue what moves you emotionally and trust that the talents will follow.

  1. Listen first, then solve

When things go mistaken (and so they all the time do in live theater), Brian’s secret weapon is deceptively easy: . He described walking chaotically right into a loading hall for a touring production and finding his lighting designer, his sound designer and his general manager all standing in separate corners and never speaking. “I led everyone individually to one side of the room to ask them what happened and what they needed,” he shared. The wrongdoer? Incorrect information from the incoming theater – not from anyone on his team. The guilt was replaced with an apology and the show went on. His philosophy: “It’s not about the blame, it’s about the real problem and where we want to go.”

Take away: Next time a conflict erupts in your organization, resist the urge to sort things while someone continues to be talking—understand the issue fully before proposing an answer.

  1. Be a vessel for the work

Brian has hung out alongside a few of the biggest names in entertainment – Denzel Washington, Jake Gyllenhaal and now Taraji P. Henson and Cedric in The Entertainer on Broadway next spring. When asked what he learned about sustained success from legends like Denzel, his answer was striking in its simplicity: “It’s about being a vessel for the art. It’s about one show, one script, one story at a time.” Brian chooses every project the identical way – based on how he likes it, never based on how vital he thinks it’s. As he put it, “I can tell you how the show makes me feel, and I hope if you want to feel that way for two and a half hours, then this is the show I invite you to.”

Take away: Ask yourself: Am I doing this because I actually care about it, or because I believe I care about it? The audience – and customers – can all the time tell the difference.
