How to play Strands
The New York Times’ Strands Puzzle is a play on the classic word search puzzle. It is currently in beta, meaning it can only remain available if enough people play it day by day.
There is a brand new game from Strands to play each day. The game presents you with a 6×8 grid of letters. The goal is to search out a bunch of words which have something in common and you’ll get a clue as to what that theme is. When you discover a theme word, it can stay highlighted in blue.
You must also discover a special word called a spangram. This tells you what the words have in common. The spangram connects no less than two sides of the board, but doesn’t have to begin or end there. While the theme words is not going to be a correct noun, the spangram generally is a proper noun. Once you discover the spangram, it can remain highlighted in yellow.
Each letter is used once in certainly one of the themed words and spangrams. You can connect letters vertically, horizontally and diagonally and it is feasible to vary direction in the course of a word. If you’re playing on a touchscreen, double tap the last letter to submit your guess.
When you discover three valid words of no less than 4 letters that usually are not a part of the subject, the Hint button is unlocked. When clicked, it highlights the letters that make up certainly one of the subject words.
But watch out: you’ve to be alert. Sometimes you’ll have to fill in missing words in a phrase. Other days the sport may revolve around synonyms or homophones. The level of difficulty varies from everyday and the puzzle authors will sometimes attempt to surprise you.
