The man identified because the shooter obvious attempted murder of former President Donald Trump was a 20-year-old from a Pittsburgh suburb, not removed from the campaign rally where a participant was killed.
Investigators were working Sunday to collect more details about Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, who they are saying opened fire on the rally in front of He was killed by the Secret Service just days before Trump accepted the Republican nomination for the third time.
An FBI official said late Saturday that investigators had not yet determined a motive. Two bystanders were seriously injured, authorities said.
Relatives of Crooks didn’t immediately reply to messages from The Associated Press. His father, Matthew Crooks, CNN said late Saturday that he was trying to seek out out “what the hell was going on” but didn’t wish to discuss his son until he had spoken to the authorities.
On Sunday, a barrier was erected near Crooks’ home, which is situated in an enclave of modest brick houses within the hills of the working-class city of Pittsburgh, blocking traffic.
Crooks’ political affiliation was not immediately clear. Records show Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but federal campaign finance reports also show he donated $15 to a progressive political motion committee on Jan. 20, 2021, the day President Joe Biden was sworn in.
Pennsylvania public court records show no previous criminal charges against Crooks.
The FBI released his identity early Sunday morning, hours after the shooting. Authorities told reporters that Crooks was not carrying any identification, so that they wanted to verify his identity using DNA and other methods.
Law enforcement recovered an AR-style rifle on the scene, based on an individual aware of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity to debate the continuing investigation.
An AP evaluation of greater than a dozen videos and photos from the scene of the Trump rally, in addition to satellite images of the location, shows that the shooter managed to approach the stage where the previous president was speaking.
A video posted on social media and geolocated by AP shows the body of an individual wearing gray camouflage clothing lying motionless on the roof of a constructing belonging to AGR International Inc., a producing facility north of the Butler Farm Show grounds where Trump’s rally took place.
The roof the person was lying on was lower than 150 meters (164 yards) from where Trump was speaking, a distance from which marksman could easily hit a human-sized goal. For reference, 150 meters is the gap from which U.S. Army recruits must hit a human-sized silhouette to be certified as a sniper with the M-16 rifle.
Investigators consider the daddy bought the gun at the very least six months ago, two police officials told the Associated Press.
The officials said federal agents were still working to find out when and the way Thomas Crooks obtained the gun. The officials weren’t authorized to publicly discuss details of the investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
