Xcel Energy said it might shut off power to about 55,000 customers in Colorado because strong winds could bring down power lines and spark wildfires.
The state’s largest utility said in a press release that customers in Boulder County and a few near Denver will lose power starting at 3 p.m. local time Saturday and at the least until noon Sunday.
The National Weather Service has issued A red flag warning is in effect for parts of the Denver area through Sunday, with wind gusts of as much as 90 miles (145 kilometers) per hour expected in dry conditions.
“Given the exceptionally strong winds associated with this weather event, damage to electrical equipment and power outages may occur,” Xcel said in its report opinion.
Xcel was found to be partially chargeable for wind propulsion sparking Marshall Fire In 2021, greater than 1,000 homes were destroyed within the Boulder suburbs. The utility recently admitted that its broken power pole had sparked the worst wildfire in Texas history.
